Not all “free books” or “free ebooks” are scams by any means, but there are a lot that I have seen over the years that are free hard cover books that offer free shipping. They seem to have gained popularity once again and this scheme relies heavily on up-selling people, auto-payments, and/or luring them into some very high ticket mentoring, mastermind, or conference programs.
Great stuff here Sean – thanks for all of these insights and sharing some best practices when it comes to affiliate marketing. I’ve never been comfortable giving it a shot, but after reading this post and your perspective on how and when to do it, I may just have to give it a try. Especially considering I’m already mentioning and recommending services and products on my site, I’m just not getting the potential rewards associated with doing so. Thanks again.
As a bit of a background summary, I have been working working full-time in affiliate marketing since 1997, regularly working 100 hour weeks running a business which not only operates as an affiliate, but provides Outsourced Affiliate Management Services for advertisers and also has provided consultancy services for three of the four largest affiliate networks in the world etc.; I have probably spent more of my life on online affiliate marketing than anybody in the world.
Another factor is that affiliation has become much more cut throat at all levels since there is so much choice, meaning its harder to establish long term relations – which are key. At business level affiliation is now competing on basis with other channels that have easier access such as PPC search and display, these are less layered and easier to access for advertiser.

A common misconception about online business is that it is quick and easy to earn money. There are far too many snake-oil salesmen out there who will sell you up the river on hollow promises of ‘six-figure launches’. Listening to most of these marketers will get you nowhere fast. Most of these ‘gurus’ will, in actual fact, they send you out into the affiliate marketing world without the benefit of an effective strategy.
In November 1994, CDNow launched its BuyWeb program. CDNow had the idea that music-oriented websites could review or list albums on their pages that their visitors might be interested in purchasing. These websites could also offer a link that would take visitors directly to CDNow to purchase the albums. The idea for remote purchasing originally arose from conversations with music label Geffen Records in the fall of 1994. The management at Geffen wanted to sell its artists' CD's directly from its website but did not want to implement this capability itself. Geffen asked CDNow if it could design a program where CDNow would handle the order fulfillment. Geffen realized that CDNow could link directly from the artist on its website to Geffen's website, bypassing the CDNow home page and going directly to an artist's music page.
The product that I am promoting to my new subscribers must pay at least or more than the cost of 100 clicks. For instance, if I buy 100 clicks for $50, then the offer must pay at least $50 per sale. Most of the CPA products I promote pay at least $75 per sale and there is no chance of losing the sale to refunds. The CPA offer I belong to does not have refunds that get passed on to the affiliate. If somebody refunds, the vendor eats it and not the affiliate.
While affiliate marketers are generally able to join affiliate networks for free, merchants usually have to pay a fee to participate in the network. Affiliate networks usually charge an initial setup fee for each merchant and often a recurring membership fee. It’s also common practice for affiliate networks to charge merchants a percentage of the commissions paid to affiliates. This percentage is known as an ‘over-ride’ and is payable on top of the affiliates commissions. But make no mistake about it, despite these fees, the benefits to the merchant for joining these networks is well worth the price. Here’s why…
Now, that i said that another question naturally arises. “Isn’t there too much competition already? What chance do i have? Competition exists in every market and you just have to face it. The fact that there is competition doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. The competition can’t stop you from creating high-quality and helpful content. There are plenty of opportunities out there and if you know how to specify your niche and appeal to a well-targeted audience then you can certainly make money. The key is to increase your targeted traffic and not just the amount of visitors who come to your website.
Now, if you think affiliate marketing is for you, you can start with it right now with almost no money. All you need is a hosting and a domain name for your website/blog. I personally use Bluehost (It’s an affiliate link. If you make a purchase with it, I will get a small commission and will use it to buy myself a nice cup of coffee. 🙂 ) for that, and that is what I recommend to others. Bluehost is very cheap and has always been there to assist me. If you also need help with setting things up, you can always ask me in the comment section below. I am more than happy to help where I can.
What about Stuart Ross of laptop entrepreneurs, he is all over every youtube video I watch and has lots of people doing ‘success story’ videos that seem insincere and copycat – thing is I watched his intro videos and he would not tell us what he was selling or the price!! Just dangled a lot of carrots at us. And after suffering through to the end of a long video there was a chance to ask questions – so I asked about disclosure on the price – never got an answer

As each state is different, I can only tell you about federal requirements in general. A limited liability company (LLC) is composed of members. When an LLC is composed of only one member, by default, it is disregarded for federal income tax purposes. This means the member will report all the activities of the LLC in Schedule C, just as a sole proprietor would, and attach Schedule C to the member’s personal income tax return, or Form 1040.

Many of the ads you see online are created by marketers who are paid each time you click on their ad. And if that click takes you to a website where you sign up to try a product or you make a purchase, the marketer may get paid even more. These are affiliate marketers. They are hired by the owner of the product to promote it on social media, on websites, and through email. Sometimes networks of affiliate marketers negotiate the rate marketers will get paid per click, per sign-up to try the product, and per purchase. Everyone from the merchant to the affiliate marketers gets a cut. And all these people may be tracking you, too, just from that one first click.
You know I never considered just paying for shipping & handling a scam, that was an informative and interesting point. However, I do believe you’re right, when the word ‘FREE’ is mentioned there shouldn’t be any payment at all or someone has told a big fib. That really aggravates me and I fuss about that quite a bit.My true pet peeve though is the scam that you mentioned called pyramid, I was involved in one but was unaware at the time.
Where there is money to be made, there are people that are trying to take advantage of others though. That is the unfortunate part of the business world. However, not all companies operate their business in this way and there are a lot of “shining stars” within the affiliate marketing world and people that truly care, that push the industry in a positive direction, and then continue to work to evolve and truly help folks within this space.
Do you have zero interest in an expensive mountain bike the company you are an affiliate of sells? Well, you probably don’t want to feature it on your blog, as it is extremely difficult to persuade readers (or anyone for that matter) that they should buy something you wouldn’t be caught spending a single penny on. When you are passionate about a product or–at the very least–interested in learning more about it, this will come through to your readers, engage them and better coax them to buy
