CPA marketing programs pay affiliates when a specific action is taken by the referral or lead. Common actions include clicks, impressions, form submits, sign-ups, registrations, or opt-ins. Since Cost-Per-Action models don’t necessarily involve a direct sale (and involve more risk taking) the payout percentages are far smaller than they are in Cost-Per-Sale.
While any “regular” job requires you to be at work to make money, affiliate marketing offers you the ability to make money while you sleep. By investing an initial amount of time into a campaign, you will see continuous returns on that time as consumers purchase the product over the following days and weeks. You receive money for your work long after you’ve finished it. Even when you’re not in front of your computer, your marketing skills will be earning you a steady flow of income.
Be sure to check what kind of customer support you can expect from your affiliate program once you have signed up. Do your research online and if possible, speak to other sellers using the program to get their thoughts. Can you speak to someone via phone or Skype or do you have to wait 72 hours for email responses? Be clear on this because trust me, you will need support at one point or another.
The final revelation occurred when I was playing around with our Google Analytics account and analysing various trends (as I do at least 10 times a day). When I looked at our affiliate network in our Traffic Sources section, everything seemed legit. They drove a lot of visitors who spent a lot of time on our website and checked out many pages. Visitors from this traffic source also had a very high conversion rate. All seemed normal.
Insurance comparison sites are fulfilling a need. People don’t want to spend hours looking for insurance, and they don’t find it fun. If you’ve ever found anyone who enjoys this kind of activity, they could possibly be a little crazy. Both Compare The Market and Gocompare.com have not only made the tedious process of finding a policy infinitely faster, they’ve also made it fun. (Think of the free meerkats and the Gocompare man you love to hate.)

No, because there are way more good, honest affiliate marketers than bad. And it’s actually gotten better. There’s more awareness today among merchants than there was when I first started, which has helped to clean things up quite a bit. The problem is there’s still a little of this attitude in the industry of looking the other way when the numbers are really good. As long the merchants are satisfied the affiliates seem to be bringing them a lot of traffic,  networks and program managers are still willing to suspend belief sometimes about where all that traffic is really coming from — because they’re making money too. At our trade shows, the sites with the most abuse going on are like the cool kids. They’re the ones throwing the big parties, because they’re making the most money and other people want in on that. But I’d argue that attitude gives the whole industry a black eye.
In the Affilorama lessons, we cover loads of different ways of getting traffic! Some of these methods are paid, such as PPC (pay-per-click) advertising, and some are free, like SEO (search engine optimization) but take a little more time and effort on your part. You can find more information on both of these traffic methods in "introduction to PPC" and "introduction to SEO."
Since you’re essentially a freelancer, you get ultimate independence in setting your own goals, redirecting your path when you feel so inclined, choosing the products that interest you, and even determining your own hours. This convenience means you can diversify your portfolio if you like or focus solely on simple and straightforward campaigns. You’ll also be free from company restrictions and regulations as well as ill-performing teams.
Wow, absolutely true! I’ve had people ask me to help them make $1000+ per month, but are unwilling to invest the time and energy required into building a successful business. They just go from one program to another and quit after a week. What they fail to understand is, at the end of the day, you need to create quality content that help your readers.
Hey Vlad! If it’s any consolation, feeling overwhelmed at multiple points while building a successful online business is very, very normal. I think it would be much more abnormal to not feel intimidated or overwhelmed at all. I can’t tell you how many times I burned out, gave up, and came back a couple of months later before I made decent money for the first time.

Advertisers often prefer affiliate marketing as a way to promote their products because they know they’ll only need to pay for the advertising when there’s a conversion. I knew when I started this affiliate program that while I’d earn less for each sale that having a network of affiliates promoting it would almost certainly increase overall sales levels.

Great informative article. I have been looking into starting a website for affiliate marketing and have looked into the affilorama blueprint training and also the wealthy affiliate. I was wondering what insight you could offer into if the are good value for the money paid? Or if you would be able to recommend another affiliate marketing training program. I am keen to get started but do not wish to be paying over the odds for something that is not worth it.
While affiliate marketers are generally able to join affiliate networks for free, merchants usually have to pay a fee to participate in the network. Affiliate networks usually charge an initial setup fee for each merchant and often a recurring membership fee. It’s also common practice for affiliate networks to charge merchants a percentage of the commissions paid to affiliates. This percentage is known as an ‘over-ride’ and is payable on top of the affiliates commissions. But make no mistake about it, despite these fees, the benefits to the merchant for joining these networks is well worth the price. Here’s why…
Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways people make money online. It is a strategy where an individual partners with a business in order to make a commission by referring readers or visitors to a business’s particular product or service. But that really is quite a simple explanation. To be really successful at making money with affiliate marketing there is a little more to it.
