I don’t like how other sites brag about their income and show hundred and thousands of dollars they are making per month while in reality very few sites can achieve that level of income. I welcome more realistic approach with more decent numbers. Because when expectations are wrong you can easily lose motivation after 2,3 months and quit. That’s why I believe it’s very important to give people a more sound motivation.

For me I would choose a program with Recurring commission. You can build a real passive income. Its the best way to go! One suggestion is contact companies who sell services and ask if you can sell their service for them. Sometimes popular affiliate programs like these have just way too many people trying to sell their service. I personally went to sitecare.ca and asked them if I could sell their service and I couldn’t be happier! So find a service you believe in and go for it!

Yes is the short answer. Any time you are planing on generating money, you should have a plan. No plan means no real focus. There may be some 1/1000 percent of a chance you will succeed, but I haven't met them yet. If you have already started and have generated an income, record how. Doing so will give you material for use in expanding your business faster.

If you’re wary something is a scam, chances are your intuition is correct. If you don’t understand what the program is or they don’t let you try it before you buy it, then I would be weary of joining at all. And if people tend to seem protective actually what you’re going to be doing an like it’s some sort of secret, then I would also avoid any programs that take that approach. They’re hiding something for reason (and its usually that you are going to be taken advantage of).
Your domain is the address for your website (e.g., www.affilorama.com) so this is the first thing you will need to do when setting up your site. Considering there are millions of websites on the internet, it's possible that the domain name you want may already be taken by someone else. So make sure you have several options in mind. Be sure to read our advice on how to choose a good domain name.
When beginning your affiliate marketing career, you’ll want to cultivate an audience that has very specific interests. This allows you to tailor your affiliate campaigns to that niche, increasing the likelihood that you’ll convert. By establishing yourself as an expert in one area instead of promoting a large array of products, you’ll be able to market to the people most likely to buy the product.
2. Finding the correct products to promote – If you’re promoting crap products, no one is going to buy them. No matter how good you are at marketing. Finding the correct merchant is one of the most important steps on your affiliate journey, you need to be promoting attractive products that people want to buy. That way, half the work is already done for you!
I am surprised someone as experienced as you could be making such statements as Affiliate Marketers like myself are still making lots of money from it.You need to diversify your portfolio and set up multiple streams of income. Since you been in the game i presume you should have a sizeable email list that you have built up over those years. You need to concentrate on high ticket items and earn big commissions like myself rather than those $20,$30,$50 commissions. You should also try e-commerce as that is the money tree nowadays!

It takes several months to really get off of the ground with affiliate marketing, and they’re some of the toughest weeks that any internet entrepreneur will face in their careers. You work hours and hours each week producing 2-3 pieces of content, answering comments/emails, etc… but still the site is barely getting any traffic or it’s not making much money.

I have to wave a red flag for a common mistake people make when they start out with affiliate marketing, which is a waste of time if you ask me. In many cases you may start out with an affiliate marketing training program to get the basic “know hows” to get started. These programs (listed in the article above about affiliate marketing training) are charging you a monthly fee to take part in their education.
Greed is something that is slowly taking over the internet marketing and affiliate marketing spaces and hopefully the better interest of the people within this niche and the “voice” of the people will reclaim this industry. I can slowly see an uprising to these and people of the opinion of “making money at any cost” are hopefully slowly transforming their businesses putting the customer first. Those that do will prevail.
I want to do an “inspirational” post to help newbies see that affiliate marketing is a long-range game plan, not a “get rich quick” scheme. Looking for those willing to share how long it took to get the first affiliate sale and a bit of insight into how you did it. Of course, your name and your website/blog link will be included. You can share it here, or email me.
File-Sharing: Web sites that host directories of music, movies, games and other software. Users upload content to file-hosting sites and then post descriptions of the material and their download links on directory sites. Uploaders are paid by the file-hosting sites based on the number of times their files are downloaded. The file-hosting sites sell premium download access to the files to the general public. The websites that host the directory services sell advertising and do not host the files themselves.
Fortunately there are many folks out there that are standing up to this kind of behavior and helping others avoid these types of programs. My suggestion is to always do your due diligence before you invest your money online, in particular if you are entering into the opportunity world and the company is not up front about what their product actually is.
It is amazing how many people in this industry have literally been taken for $1,000’s of their hard earn money. It is quite sickening that the business model for many companies has been based on how much money you can get out of a single customer versus offering a truly valuable service. Thus the reason people in general are so skeptical of this industry, it is full of crookery and you only have to be ripped off once by these affiliate marketing scams before your guard goes up.
Niche-specific challenges: It’s relatively easy to create content for the “tech how-to” niche (like “how to install Windows” or “how to use WinRar) - you just need a screencasting software and a microphone. For niches like DIY plumbing, however, you need significant time, energy and skills. This often compels marketers to flood the easier niches, increasing competition.
No I didn’t threaten anything, I just let them know that I wasn’t going to be promoting their program any longer. They had paid me out for some time before this happened, so the trust wasn’t completely lost…but they strung me along for some time and I think they actually got tired of me asking for it and just paid it out one day. It happens on occasion, but it is very rare. Just something to consider when joining affiliate programs.
This is huge in BC Canada right now, GAZ has over 10,000 people buying into this scam! Its unbelievable this is not illegal- the catch is they all sell their lives to show how rich they are and they only work for 2 hours a day. Sign up for a membership for $99 but then you have to buy a water filter system for $8000…. scam for sure. Hopefully someone catches on to this soon. It was on ctv news, an 70 year old man fell for this and they refused to give his money back. Funny thing is the one running this brags about making $300,000 a year…
Sorry to hear you were taken by the MOBE scheme. You certainly are not alone and currently the receiver is in the process of recouping some of the money (as much as they can), to pay back to the customers. Be careful not to fall in this trap again, anything with a “phone coach” is more than likely a scam. These people, as you have figured out are not in fact coaches, rather they are high pressure sales people with the only goal of getting as much as they can get out of customers.

As the mobile web continues to grow, we will start to see the emergence of the convergence of mobile and web apps. One question I was asked during my presentation was, “Everyone talks about mobile apps, and making mobile apps more engaging. Why don’t people focus on the mobile web? Traffic to my properties from mobile devices continues to grow, but people don’t talk about how to increase performance and conversion here…” This is where the next iteration of innovation will occur. Technologies that allow advertisers to deliver relevant content, based on the origination of the user. Deferred deeplinking was the first attempt to cross this chasm, but it still leaves much to be desired.
That is exactly where the idea of MLM being a pyramid derives from. Not only are you selling product for someone else, you are having to pay them (often times a lot) of money just for the privilege to promote their products and services. In order for people to succeed in almost ALL MLM’s, they require a downline of folks. They cannot rely on their own sales of the product itself to drive their business and this is where that business model breaks down and in my opinion, is very deceptive.
When Tim Berners-Lee invented the hypertext webpage, he envisioned a world of shared information. It didn’t take long for businesses to realize that the web was a new shopping platform too. In fact, years before the web, in 1989, the first ever internet affiliate program was born when William J Tobin enlisted people to refer customers to PC Flowers, Inc. The company is considered the web’s first ever commercial success story, and it paved the way for today’s multi-billion dollar affiliate marketing industry.

There are people who are getting into the industry who can still make some good money with great content, a solid following and / or an angle or technology not yet matched. The market is growing every day. Competition does increase, but so do the opportunities. If you’re not ready and willing to put in the time or effort without seeing immediate return, affiliate marketing is probably not the best place to start. Thanks for your comments!
So what’s my point? Affiliate marketing is not dead. Not in the least. It’s simply evolved. It’s fluid and ever changing  so both affiliates and merchants need to be prepared to adjust to those changes and be ready to adapt.  You as the affiliate manager need to be ready to support affiliates in their quest for earning opportunities and changes to strategy. That’s why it’s important for you to stay on top of important topics in the space.

Because it’s been so good for me and the results have been amazing, I’ve stayed with them for 11 years and counting. I am probably a bit different than most of the people reading this, I have never done an affiliate program or made money online..I have a great career but I realize to have true freedom I need to do something else for myself..I see all of these people on fb pimping out new programs every week and talking about their amazing lifestyle but it is so hard to know who or what to trust so I haven’t started anything.
Great post, Sean! I have been using Adsense for the most part for two years now and each year, due to great content, my income has doubled. Thanks for all the great content, and this is sure to open my eyes a bit more to the likes of Amazon, which, I will admit, I have been ignoring due to the way they treat their affiliates. But, maybe it’s just me being a turd….

Most new affiliate marketers have no problem creating content…. at first. But 6 months in? Hardly anyone makes it that far. The reason is because most people simply don’t like to write as much as they think they do. Once writing becomes a job instead of a hobby, motivation to keep going can easily waver. As an affiliate marketer, you’ll essentially become a full time content creator, and most of that will be in the written form. Can you handle writing 1,000 word articles every single day?
Hey, thanks for the great post. I’ve been following Pat Flynn and love his “give and it shall be given unto you” attitude..my perception anyway. At 50, with a high school education, I’m trying to learn affiliate marketing from information online. What I’ve gleened so far is to focus on giving the best, most honest information, like your Parents would give you. In exchange for your efforts rewards will come.
Affiliate marketing has grown quickly since its inception. The e-commerce website, viewed as a marketing toy in the early days of the Internet, became an integrated part of the overall business plan and in some cases grew to a bigger business than the existing offline business. According to one report, the total sales amount generated through affiliate networks in 2006 was £2.16 billion in the United Kingdom alone. The estimates were £1.35 billion in sales in 2005.[19] MarketingSherpa's research team estimated that, in 2006, affiliates worldwide earned US$6.5 billion in bounty and commissions from a variety of sources in retail, personal finance, gaming and gambling, travel, telecom, education, publishing, and forms of lead generation other than contextual advertising programs.[20]

On the bright side, even a small commission on a cheap item usually comes to more money than a single click on a banner ad, but then a visitor buying something is much less likely than someone clicking on the ad. As such, while an affiliate marketing campaign has the potential to offer enough money to make it a full-time job, it can take months or years of work to reach that point.

Insurance comparison sites are fulfilling a need. People don’t want to spend hours looking for insurance, and they don’t find it fun. If you’ve ever found anyone who enjoys this kind of activity, they could possibly be a little crazy. Both Compare The Market and Gocompare.com have not only made the tedious process of finding a policy infinitely faster, they’ve also made it fun. (Think of the free meerkats and the Gocompare man you love to hate.)
The products and services you will be promoting to your audience must be relevant and good quality. Make sure you believe in them and know everything about them, because this will be crucial to you delivering the sales pitch to your audience. You need to build trust with your audience so make sure the products and services you choose to promote are trustworthy enough.
Thats a great point, and I’ve definitely seen my fair share of those “how to start a blog” posts. That’s always been a good fit for people at Location 180, and if they do a good job on the post (truly make it useful) that’s one that doesnt bother me as much – solely because I know how valuable starting a blog can be for your life and goals. So if it’s some personal finance blogger that creates one and you start a blog from that by following their tutorial – all the better!
Develop a strategy — What problems are you solving? What niche or audience do you want to serve? Outline the above, and determine how you want to get there while offering something unique or a little different. After that, design your brand look and identify your messaging. While you are at it, set an action plan you can live with based on how much time you have to allocate to your affiliate efforts.

Adgild Hop, Head of Retail Consulting at Cap Gemini commented “2014 has been an important milestone for the online retail sector, with the £100 billion mark being exceeded for the first time. When we consider that almost £1 in every £4 is now spent online, and that a large proportion of the other £3 is influenced by some form of digital interaction, it becomes very clear that retailers need to continue to embrace the opportunity that e-retail poses.”
MoreNiche is one of the few affiliate networks that offer free affiliate training and ongoing personal support in this way. Many people who don’t know about our network currently pay out hundreds, if not thousands of pounds on affiliate training courses, seminars and even personal mentors each year. But they only learn the same information we give away for free once you’re working with us!

As affiliate networks keep coming up with more effective techniques, as well as better payment methods these numbers can only keep getting bigger. In addition, proficient online entrepreneurs like you know just how incredibly effective blogging can be at driving traffic to their websites for the purpose of marketing affiliate products and services to visitors. Blogging, and affiliate marketing is indeed a very lucrative business.

So, now it’s time for me to answer the questions. Let’s start from the first one. Of course, you can make money with affiliate marketing. “Is affiliate marketing a scam?“. No, it’s not. It’s just one the many ways you can use to monetize your website/blog and it’s one of the most popular ways to make money online. If people couldn’t make money with affiliate marketing it wouldn’t be so popular.
Insurance comparison sites are fulfilling a need. People don’t want to spend hours looking for insurance, and they don’t find it fun. You can put up banners on your site, to promote your affiliate offers. Most affiliate programs will usually provide their own creatives when you sign up for their offers. All you have to do is insert the banner on a highly trafficked page (your affiliate tracking is usually embedded within the code). Banner ads in the right locations can do a great job of driving sales.
Let’s say you have a promotions page where you’re promoting a product via affiliate links. If you currently get 5,000 visits/month at a 2% conversion rate, you have 100 referrals. To get to 200 referrals, you can either focus on getting 5,000 more visitors, or simply increasing the conversion rate to 4%. Which sounds easier? Instead of spending months building domain authority with blogging and guest posts to get more organic traffic, you just have to increase the conversion rate by 2%. This can include landing page optimization, testing your calls-to-action, and having a conversion rate optimization strategy in place. By testing and optimizing your site, you’ll get far better results with much less effort.
