Hey Celia! I don’t aim to maximize profits through this site. I do make small commissions (compared to a lot of what’s out there in this industry) for people that purchase legitimate training/tools that I recommend if it’s what they’re looking for. But I prefer to give my training away for free, as I’d rather help people in an industry flooded with crooks than maximize my profits – I have other websites I focus on for that purpose 🙂
In April 2008 the State of New York inserted an item in the state budget asserting sales tax jurisdiction over Amazon.com sales to residents of New York, based on the existence of affiliate links from New York–based websites to Amazon.[45] The state asserts that even one such affiliate constitutes Amazon having a business presence in the state, and is sufficient to allow New York to tax all Amazon sales to state residents. Amazon challenged the amendment and lost at the trial level in January 2009. The case is currently making its way through the New York appeals courts.
I am surprised someone as experienced as you could be making such statements as Affiliate Marketers like myself are still making lots of money from it.You need to diversify your portfolio and set up multiple streams of income. Since you been in the game i presume you should have a sizeable email list that you have built up over those years. You need to concentrate on high ticket items and earn big commissions like myself rather than those $20,$30,$50 commissions. You should also try e-commerce as that is the money tree nowadays!
I've been in internet marketing for over 10 years, and I've purchased dozens of illegitimate products for the sole purpose of evaluating them and exposing the truth about these products to anyone who's thinking about purchasing it. I never let money influence my rating of a product and your success/safety is my absolute highest priority. Don't want to buy a product? I was a victim of this exact scam. The only reason why I was successful in having my credit card restored, and my "customer number," deleted was because I wrote to the FTC as it is recommended in the emails that everyone receives from the FTC E-mail list of which I am a recipient of emails from the FTC, and they helped me with this exact situation that I embarrassingly tried. Thank you for restoring my money and my not being a victim of this problem. I am very grateful for this site and the award winning professionals who research countless types of illegal and scamming individuals who could ruin your life.
Many people are just lying to you. Making money is not easy at all. Why should it be easy in online world? You are right. It’s different from a so called normal business. You just promote services/products and earn a commission. You don’t need to stock products, ship or return them. This is an easy part of affiliate marketing business. The rest is not easy. It takes effort and time.
It would have to be the guy who was cookie-stuffing with a smiley face. This guy was hanging out in the online chat forums for major brands like Apple and Blackberry, posting these jokey little comments like any other engaged member of the community, except at the end of his posts instead of using the usual smiley face icon provided on the site he was using a cookie-stuffer in the shape of a smiley face. All someone had to do was read his post with his fake smiley face, and they’d get a cookie stuffed on their browser that gave this guy credit for any purchases they made at hundreds of sites around the Web.
The cost of Five Figure Niche Site are really up there and so it sounds like the training is superb which is what I would hope for that much money. I’ve recently gotten into something else called Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing and I haven’t gotten through all the training yet, but what it does teach so far is pretty good. Of course nothing can beat Wealthy Affiliate though. Do you know of anyone who’s been successful with those other Affiliate Marketing programs?
Description of system: The program was made by Michael Brown, a person who once designed one of the best affiliate marketing systems I’ve ever tried: Niche Blitzkrieg. I actually rated that one 8 out of 10 stars, but that was because it was a little bit cheaper than this new one. Unfortunately, that program died out and he moved into Niche60, but the guy is legit as is his training.
There is also last-click attribution, which involves assigning the order commission to the correct affiliate. When you click an affiliate ad and buy something, the credit goes to the affiliate whose ad you last clicked.  So if you go looking for a coupon online, the coupon site will get the referral commission because they are the “last click” before the sale. However, we humans love to click as much as possible, so the order may not always get attributed to the correct affiliate. This can generate a lot of wasted spending because, as humans, we can’t resist clicking on things! It’s up the affiliate marketer to determine who the commission really belongs to.
I was able to make my first online dollars through Amazon Affiliate sales… It was never much and in the beginning I was just excited to make $10 in a month, which was enough for a free ebook or two. With regular updates and link inclusions in my posts over time I was able to grow the number up to like $300 a month–which I was pretty happy with. Of course the payout rates are paltry compared to a sale of an info product like one from Unconventional Guides, etc. Thing is, people seem to be more open to purchasing physical products rather than information products…
It can be very difficult when starting out to determine what is a legitimate opportunity and ethical way to build a business when there are so many companies and individuals out there that are operating in a way that is quite unethical. Glad I could offer you some clarity in respect to items to consider and scams to avoid when looking to get into affiliate marketing.
Over the last few years, we have seen a number of Google algorithm updates that have had a severe impact on the affiliate marketing business, and even many experienced online marketers found a sudden and dramatic drop in their income and traffic to their websites overnight. The search engine giant has long stated that it wants to focus on delivering quality, relevant results, and as its algorithms continue to evolve, websites that don’t meet its quality guidelines end up being pushed to the back of the search results.

If you are involved in such a program as this or being sold a program like this, you are on the fringes of operating in a space in which the FTC is going to be investigating the program you are involved with. If you are operating in an MLM where your goal is to recruit others into it, be careful. That is not an mlm, that is likely going to be deemed at some point a pyramid scheme.

As an affiliate, you will make money off commissions. If a company is offering a ridiculously high commission percentage, don't believe it straight away. It's not impossible (some programs really are quite generous), but it's better to do your research and see if they really pay out their affiliates. Also, make sure the products and services they offer are genuine and of good quality.

Thanks Vitaliy for your unbiased review. I have looked to affiliate marketing because I need to have a home based job. I have found lots of different sites offering to make me rich quick but I have found that there is no such thing. I have found that what I really need is an education so that I can build my skills and then build my own business. Wealthy Affiliate offers this at a bargain price.

This is extremely helpful information for somebody who is a newbie blogger! I’ve been looking for an all inclusive “guide” to explain affiliate marketing and this is the best I’ve found. Quick question for you – when you talk about the cookie expiration date, is that from the date that you post your review/recommendation or from the date that the reader clicks on the link? For example, the affiliate links you posted in this post are well over 90 days old but if I click on one of them now and buy that product, do you still get paid? Just curious how that works.
When I called the attorney general’s office in Louisiana, they said I wasn’t the first person who had called to complain about this sort of practice, but they didn’t know of any legal action I could take. I said, “Really? How can this not be illegal? If I had a store and someone stood outside with a sign grabbing my customers to take a cut of my sales, they wouldn’t be able to get away with that. But you’re telling me this is O.K.?” So, I started talking about it in online forums and the next thing I know people are coming to me asking me questions and things kind of took off from there.
The products and services you will be promoting to your audience must be relevant and good quality. Make sure you believe in them and know everything about them, because this will be crucial to you delivering the sales pitch to your audience. You need to build trust with your audience so make sure the products and services you choose to promote are trustworthy enough.
Most importantly, you need to take action. The most successful affiliate marketers are those who do, rather than those who think about doing. Take what you learn from Affilorama and start working hard. You might not get it right the first time, but the experience is what really counts when you are learning affiliate marketing. You will hone your skills and abilities over time, so don’t sweat the fine points!
In spite of what those who describe the affiliate marketing program as legit, which is many cases it probably is, the fact is if they wanted you to try a free sample to decide if you like the product, why ask for your credit card information? The answer is simple, they count on you not remembering to cancel the subscription within the 30 day period. This way they can legitimately hook you into monthly payments you never intended to make. If they want to be honest about the process, let them send out the free sample and then let you decide if you want subscribe. That whole process is a ripoff because it counts on you making a mistake that allows them to make money off of that mistake.
Campaign tracking tools are more robust, allowing better decision-making and supporting a wider variety of promotional methods. In addition to standard online sales tracking, you can also track referrals by phone, by coupon code, by in-store purchases stemming from online referrals, across multiple devices, and even pay affiliates by multiple in-bound referral sources.
The “red flags” have to be set off when it feels as though you are being sold on “the riches” or “the glam” without truly being told what you are doing, what you will be selling, and how you will be selling it. If a company or person selling you into a program feels as though they are being secretive, then you absolutely should avoid the program at all costs.
Affiliate marketing has long been associated with poor quality websites with thin content and an overwhelming amount of advertising. For many years, most of the more respectable vendors stayed clear of the whole scene, instead sticking to more tried-and-tested methods of marketing their goods. In short, affiliate marketing has changed enormously in recent years, with beginners finding it much harder to get started without some professional guidance. However, while affiliate marketing has changed, that does not mean that it’s dead: it has simply evolved. So, is affiliate marketing dead? Well, the old methods are, but the entire industry is being reborn. Those fortunate enough to recognize this early will be rewarded in a huge financial way.
I too was victim of an MLM, and looking back I just have to laugh. I was so excited about it, and I tried so hard to convince people that it was legitimate, and even though technically it wasn’t a “scam”, there was no value in it. Sure, I made money, but it wasn’t consistent. It wasn’t sustainable, and in my opinion now, it sure as heck wasn’t ethical.
Thanks for your time and really great feedback from your experiences with Google, Amazon and EBay. The amount of people struggling with this issue is really mind boggling and I’m all ears to potential solutions to the problem. I’m also all ears on how this industry will survive if Google decides to shut it down completely. The power really is in their hands in a lot of ways. But since they don’t own EVERYTHING yet, there are still opportunities out there in the social, mobile and offline arenas. There are also a few affiliates who have recovered from both Panda and Penguin and are still going strong. Though those seem to be far and few between at the moment…
Niche-specific challenges: It’s relatively easy to create content for the “tech how-to” niche (like “how to install Windows” or “how to use WinRar) - you just need a screencasting software and a microphone. For niches like DIY plumbing, however, you need significant time, energy and skills. This often compels marketers to flood the easier niches, increasing competition.
Now, if you think affiliate marketing is for you, you can start with it right now with almost no money. All you need is a hosting and a domain name for your website/blog. I personally use Bluehost (It’s an affiliate link. If you make a purchase with it, I will get a small commission and will use it to buy myself a nice cup of coffee. 🙂 ) for that, and that is what I recommend to others. Bluehost is very cheap and has always been there to assist me. If you also need help with setting things up, you can always ask me in the comment section below. I am more than happy to help where I can.

Forms of new media have also diversified how companies, brands, and ad networks serve ads to visitors. For instance, YouTube allows video-makers to embed advertisements through Google's affiliate network.[22][23] New developments have made it more difficult for unscrupulous affiliates to make money. Emerging black sheep are detected and made known to the affiliate marketing community with much greater speed and efficiency.[citation needed]
