The most popular way to make money with SEO seems to be affiliate marketing. Just put some of these terms in YouTube and you'll find plenty of guru's. I'm on the verge of creating a site for marketing these digital products but had a thought today; why are all these guru's selling courses? From people like Alex Becker all the way down the food chain, they all have things in common like clickbait titles on YouTube, video intros where they show off exotic cars and always showing off their earnings pages as well. I started to wonder, was I the product? I mean I haven't purchased any courses but I have spent plenty of time watching these videos looking for those golden nuggets.
Generally said, no matter what niche... just have to be clean white hat type of marketing, that is trying to help customer and seller/business. That's it! No scam, no fraud, ponzi schemes, grey hat, black hat, etc. The top search engines became smarter and the businesses that need advertising became more strict on the type of promotions they permit.
Great post in pointing out the top affiliate marketing scams. What I notice is that since pyramid schemes are illegal, a lot of companies are just adding some products into their “scheme” to hide the fact their still scamming people of their money. Even if you know what a pyramid scheme is, you still might be scam by them because they are just so good at using psychology to trick people. They really bring a bad name to making money online…
Hi Kyle, that is a good post. A few weeks ago i was one click away from joining an affiliate network called GAZ then i looked further into it and it looke to me to be one of the systems that simply sells its own memberships. The coach that i was connected with assured me it was a legit system that sells health products but for the life of me i could not find proof of that online.
This is extremely helpful information for somebody who is a newbie blogger! I’ve been looking for an all inclusive “guide” to explain affiliate marketing and this is the best I’ve found. Quick question for you – when you talk about the cookie expiration date, is that from the date that you post your review/recommendation or from the date that the reader clicks on the link? For example, the affiliate links you posted in this post are well over 90 days old but if I click on one of them now and buy that product, do you still get paid? Just curious how that works.
Thats a great point, and I’ve definitely seen my fair share of those “how to start a blog” posts. That’s always been a good fit for people at Location 180, and if they do a good job on the post (truly make it useful) that’s one that doesnt bother me as much – solely because I know how valuable starting a blog can be for your life and goals. So if it’s some personal finance blogger that creates one and you start a blog from that by following their tutorial – all the better!
Affiliates were among the earliest adopters of pay per click advertising when the first pay-per-click search engines emerged during the end of the 1990s. Later in 2000 Google launched its pay per click service, Google AdWords, which is responsible for the widespread use and acceptance of pay per click as an advertising channel. An increasing number of merchants engaged in pay per click advertising, either directly or via a search marketing agency, and realized that this space was already occupied by their affiliates. Although this situation alone created advertising channel conflicts and debates between advertisers and affiliates, the largest issue concerned affiliates bidding on advertisers names, brands, and trademarks. Several advertisers began to adjust their affiliate program terms to prohibit their affiliates from bidding on those type of keywords. Some advertisers, however, did and still do embrace this behavior, going so far as to allow, or even encourage, affiliates to bid on any term, including the advertiser's trademarks.
Lol I have been getting constants ads linking to Global Affiliate Zone (globalaffiliatezone.com) in my Facebook. It is almost mind boggling how this is not illegal. The bread and butter is you join this group and get others to join this group and then you run around and post about how great it is and put up cliche and trite motivational quotes all over social media. Man I guess it shouldn’t bother me that there are stupid people out there who fall for these traps,m but it is bothersome the effort and energy put in by the people producing this content.

A quick and inexpensive method of making money without the hassle of actually selling a product, affiliate marketing has an undeniable draw for those looking to increase their income online. But how does an affiliate get paid after linking the seller to the consumer? The answer is complicated. The consumer doesn’t always need to buy the product for the affiliate to get a kickback. Depending on the program, the affiliate’s contribution to the seller’s sales will be measured differently. The affiliate may get paid in various ways:
